Back in February 2020, NDC’S founders and best mates Blair & Ricardo embarked on the journey of a lifetime. They were off to New York for America’s biggest wine and spirits expo, Vinexpo.
It was a snowy winter in New York and the boys were armed with only their shorts, jandals (‘flip flops’), their “Make Gin Not War" t-shirts and their first two gins, Adorn and Verdigris.
Right from the get-go, the Blair and Ricardo Show was laid on thick. America responded well to the fun-first approach of the NDC story, our brand and most importantly, the quality of our gin.
Then Covid hit while in NY and the guys were told by many that the dream was over.
But in true NDC fashion, the duo got on with the job, securing an importer, distributor and a national sales manager & brand ambassador. This was a feat that was later described as unheard of; it should have taken them years to accomplish what they pulled off in a matter of months.
With plans of multiple annual sales trips and grand goals of breaking in to multiple states, the guys really had their work cut out for them. Could they achieve their export goals in this new Covid-19 environment?
Fast forward to August 2023 and NDC has gained distribution partners in 9 states in the USA, have won an impressive array of top medals and awards, developed a strong sales force and have been picked by many as the next big up-and-comer in the gin category. Two full containers of vodka and gin have journeyed to the Land of the Free, with another 3-5 containers forecasted over the next twelve months.
However, the second, extremely important sales trip has had to be put off multiple times due to consistently raising capital and reintroducing profits to grow the business capabilities and brand during the Covid pandemic.
The team had finally raised enough money to get back to America in Febuary this year when the unthinkable happened; Cyclone Gabrielle hit. And she hit in the biggest month of the year for our region’s economy. For the third year running, the Art Deco Festival was cancelled and we had to postpone our trip yet again. We also had to use all our cash reserves to pay staff and keep the lights on over the months that followed.
But we weren’t hit the worst so we collaborated with Thieving Acorn on a cyclone recovery gin & t-shirts campaign which has raised over $75,000. This money goes directly to the people who were impacted the most. We will continue to donate in the years to come as the regions recovery will be a long process.
NDC needs your help to realise it’s dreams and help us take New Zealand spirits to the world.
The USA fundraiser will help purchase flights, accommodation, rental cars, and Two Minute Noodles.
